Electromyography

It is a medical procedure that involves assessing the function of skeletal muscles and nerves, and is extremely important in diagnosing disorders of the peripheral nervous system.

There are two types of electromyographic tests:

• A study of nerve conduction that involves stimulating nerves at various points along their path using a small electrical current. The doctor will place small electrodes on the skin for recording and will apply a small electric shock to the skin in another area of the limb being tested. Although the patient may be slightly startled by the sensation of the electrical stimulation at first, it is not painful, and most patients feel comfortable throughout the testing procedure.
• Needle testing involves inserting small, thin needles into the muscle to record electrical activity. The patient may feel slight pain and discomfort when the needles are inserted. The doctor will ask the patient to relax and then gently tense their muscles, while the doctor listens to and monitors the electrical signals.

If the patient is taking anticoagulants, has a lung condition, or is at risk of infection, they must inform the doctor performing the test. On the day of the test, the patient should avoid applying any lotions or creams to the area to be examined and should not wear any jewelry. Results are available immediately after the test.
