DEXA

Measuring bone mineral density.

Bone densitometry is the most advanced diagnostic test for measuring bone mineral density (calcium content), which allows for the diagnosis of osteoporosis, monitoring the progression of the disease over time, and assessing the effectiveness of treatment.

Osteoporosis is characterized by a decrease in bone mineral density, leading to a subsequent decrease in bone strength and an increased risk of fracture.

Early diagnosis of the condition using DEXA bone densitometry is very important because there are currently methods available to halt bone loss and, consequently, reduce the complications of the disease.

A referral for testing is made by the family doctor or a specialist (orthopedist, internist, rheumatologist, endocrinologist) when patients show signs of a bone disorder.

Bone density testing is recommended for women after the onset of menopause, as well as for men over the age of 50, especially if they are smokers or have undergone long-term corticosteroid treatment.

Bone densitometry involves scanning the body with X-rays; the radiation dose is very low, while the method’s accuracy and sensitivity are maximized. The test can be performed early on, as soon as the first risk factors are identified, and allows for the quantification of bone mineral density throughout the entire skeleton—a whole-body scan—or in the most fragile areas (hip, spine, forearm).

Bone densitometry has the advantage of requiring no prior preparation; it is noninvasive and painless.
